NRC Report: Pressure Needed to Improve Security and Privacy of Electronic Health Records
March 5, 1997
On March 5, the National Research Council (NRC) released its report, "For the Record: Protecting Electronic Health Information". The report discusses ways of better protecting the privacy and security of health information that is stored in an electronic format.
The new report says that industry standards, regulatory action, and pressure from consumers all are needed to bolster the privacy and security of electronic patient records. This report is significant given that the Department of Health and Human Services must develop industry standards for protecting health information data by February 1998.
