Authorities' Internet cutoff could backfire
Egypt's four main online providers went dark, but the drastic move didn't stop demonstrators.
The shutoff is an enormous regression for a country that has always had a very strong and very engaged civil society. The Egyptian government just can't cut off the entire nation forever, even if it does serve short-term goals.
To silence protesters, Egypt took a rare step even among the most authoritarian governments: It cut off Internet access throughout the country.
