Job Opportunity: Development Associate

The Center for Democracy and Technology is seeking a Development Associate to aid in its development work. The job offers an exciting opportunity to provide key support for all development and fundraising activities in a leading Internet policy organization. In January 2008, CDT launched new effort to reach out to individual donors. The Development Associate will aid CDT’s senior staff on this effort as well as its regular fundraising. CDT is a non-profit public interest group, based in Washington DC, dedicated to promoting civil liberties in the digital age. CDT is one of the world’s premier Internet, technology and civil liberties advocacy organizations, working at the cutting edge of policy issues concerning privacy, free expression, open government, and intellectual property.

Development Associate Position: The responsibilities of the Development Associate will be to –

  • Coordinate multiple projects and deadlines involved in CDT’s fundraising and marketing efforts;
  • Maintain foundation, corporation and individual donor files;
  • Maintain fundraising databases
  • Conduct preliminary research on prospective corporate, foundation and individual donors;
  • Coordinate invoicing and regular appeal letters with responsible staff members;
  • Answer donor questions regarding fundraising;
  • Draft foundation grant proposals,
  • Writes reports to foundations and other funders
  • Work with consultants to maintain guest lists, gather and prepare registration materials and other duties as assigned for fund-raising events;
  • Provide support for development committee meetings
  • Works with Senior team and outside consultants to create and execute a cultivation strategy for potential individual, corporate and foundation donors.

Qualifications: This position is designed for candidates with significant experience. An ideal candidate would have –

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • One to three years of progressively responsible experience in development, public relations, or non-profit administration,
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Macintosh OS.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong project planning skills and an ability to organize and prioritize work and
  • A commitment to CDT’s public interest mission

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience, and is competitive with public interest and government pay scales. CDT also offers excellent benefits, including health care and dental coverage, a retirement plan, and generous vacation and parental leave.
