Does the FEC "news exemption" extend to cover online news and commentary sites when they clearly advocate for and against federal candidates?

Sites like Slate (slate.msn.com) and Salon (www.salon.com) offer wire reports from the Associated Press, Reuters, and others mixed in with editorial news written by staff members. Note that while Slate does publish a print edition, Salon is an Internet-only magazine.
