Under a special section in the USA Patriot Act, the Inspector General of the Department of Justice has designated an official to review information and receive complaints alleging abuses of civil rights and civil liberties by Department of Justice employees.   • Amnesty International USA - holding public hearings on racial profiling in September and October 2003. The Congressional-style hearings will be open to the public, including the media. The hearings will examine racial profiling at the local level, the federal level, and by airport security. Invited victims, victim advocates, national experts, and law enforcement will testify during each section before a panel of local and national experts. Written testimony will be accepted prior to and at each event.   • The Bill of Rights Defense Committee: A grass-roots movement has emerged to push for repeal of various aspects of the PATRIOT Act and to encourage city councils and other local officials to uphold constitutional rights by ensuring that police and other local authorities do not cooperate with counter-productive federal dragnets and snooping. Organized out of Northhampton, Massachusetts, this group's website offers a wealth of information and links to the increasing number of communities that have passed or are now considering local resolutions on security and freedom.

It is specifically focusing on documenting cases where inmates have been physically abused, mistreated, denied legal and civil rights. It is also searching to gather information on specific cases where individuals have been mistakenly accused by the law enforcement of having links to the terrorist attacks of Sept 11th.
