Non-Profit Organizations

  • American Civil Liberties Union - As the national civil liberties organization, the ACLU conducts extensive litigation on Constitutional issues that include the right to privacy. Its Washington office lobbies Congress on issues of civil rights and liberties.
  • American Consumer Credit Education Support Services - Provides news & information about financial privacy, how to prevent identity theft and issues surrounding the granting of credit.
  • Call For Action - CFA is an international, nonprofit network of consumer hotlines that assist consumers through mediation and education in resolving problems with businesses, government agencies, and other organizations.
  • Consumer Action - A non-profit, membership-based organization, Consumer Action advances consumer rights, refers consumers to complaint-handling agencies through a free hotline, publishes educational materials and advocates for consumers in the media and before lawmakers.
  • Consumer Project on Technology - Created by Ralph Nader to focus on a variety of issues, including telecommunications regulation, pricing of ISDN services, and fair use under the copyright law, the CPT works on issues that include the pricing, ownership and development of pharmaceutical drugs and the impact of technology on personal privacy.
  • Electronic Frontier Foundation - Formed to maintain and enhance intellectual freedom, privacy, and other values of civil liberties and democracy in networked communications, the EFF publishes newsletters, Internet Guidebooks and other documents, provides mailing lists and other online forums, and hosts a large electronic document archive.
  • Electronic Privacy Information Center - EPIC conducts litigation, sponsors conferences, produces reports, publishes the EPIC Alert and leads campaigns on privacy issues. The Center was established to focus public attention on emerging privacy issues relating to the National Information Infrastructure, such as the Clipper Chip, the Digital Telephony proposal, medical records privacy and the sale of consumer data.

  • People for Internet Responsibility - The PFIR is a global, grassroots, ad hoc network of individuals who are concerned about the current and future operations, development, management, and regulation of the Internet in responsible manners.
  • Privacy & American Business - PAB, a source for tracking new business-privacy issues and for promoting voluntary, balanced consumer privacy policies and practices, is the activity of the non-profit Center for Social & Legal Research.
  • Privacy Exchange - a free global information resource made possible by grants from an initial group of sponsoring companies and associations in the United States, Canada, and Germany, who saw the vital importance of constructive dialogue and creative work in the areas of data protection involving consumers and commerce.
  • Privacy Foundation - Based at the University of Denver, the Foundation has as its objectives: researching technologies that undermine the privacy of individuals; informing the public about what they can do to protect themselves; and influencing lawmakers, corporations and citizens to devise solutions. Original research reports and updated news items posted regularly on the website.
  • Privacy Rights Clearinghouse - A California-based organization, the Clearinghouse has produced many fact sheets and an annual report. The Clearinghouse maintains a toll free hotline to provide advice to consumers about their rights.
  • Private Citizen - Created to stop junk calls and junk mail from invading your privacy, Private Citizen is a consumer organization fighting the direct marketing industry's privacy-abusive practices.
  • US Privacy Council - The USPC, founded to deal with national privacy issues, is a coalition of US privacy groups andindividuals. USPC works in Washington monitoring legislation and the activities of government agencies. USPC works closely with other groups on privacy issues including National ID cards, reforming credit reporting, Caller ID and international issues.
  • US Public Interest Research Groups - The PIRGs are non-profit, non-partisan consumer and environmental watchdog groups. PIRGs advocate improvement of consumer privacy laws, preventing identity theft and correcting credit reports. The Groups' fact sheets and reports are available on Web.

  • Operation Opt-Out - CDT Operation Opt-Out allows users to opt out of offline marketers and other information gathering organizations, such as banks, Department of Motor Vehicles, and online profiling firms.
  • CDT Snooper - CDT Snooper provides details regarding the information a Web site may gather about your Internet connection while you surf.
