In a letter dated February 16, 1999, CDT asked nine of the leading computer manufactures that use Intel products how they set defaults on the new Pentium III Processor Serial Number (PSN).

Here are the responses that we have received:

Future consumer products will default to OFF in BIOS (within a few months)

Gateway 2000 Inc.

No Response

 

Hewlett-Packard Company

Unclear

Users will be given choice (no defaults discussed). It will be made "very clear" whether PSN is enabled or disabled.

IBM

OFF in BIOS

Information will be provided via online help and shipped with PCs.

Packard Bell/NEC

No Response

 

Sony Corporation of America

ON (Consumers may go to Intel or Sony Web site to download software utility to control PSN. Each PC box will contain a notice that PSN is on)

Future shipments will turn PSN OFF by pre-installed software utility.

Toshiba America Information Systems

Awaiting further response
