House Joins Senate In Offering Fixes to the PATRIOT Act This week members of the House joined their Senate colleagues in calling for some reasonable changes to the most far-reaching powers granted to the Justice Department by the USA PATRIOT Act. The new House version of the "SAFE" (Security and Freedom Ensured) Act, bipartisan legislation already introduced in the Senate to fix the PATRIOT Act, has the support of CDT as well as a number of organizations from the right and left. The House SAFE Act, H.R. 3352, was introduced on Tuesday by 10 original cosponsors, including both Republicans and Democrats. | |

CDT Urges Congress to Move Forward with Legislation to Fix the Patriot Act CDT announced today its support for the Security and Freedom Ensured ("SAFE") Act, a bipartisan effort to place reasonable limitations on some of the most far-reaching surveillance powers authorized by the USA PATRIOT Act. Introduced by Senator Larry Craig (R-ID), the bill is cosponsored by Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Michael Crapo (R-ID), Russell Feingold (D-WI), John Sununu (R-NH), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Jeff Bingaman (D-NM). CDT urges the Senate leadership to take action on the SAFE Act and and the growing number of other bills placing procedural limits on PATRIOT Act powers. | |

Congress Needs To Control The Data Collection Chaos, CDT Says The Center for Democracy and Technology today announced support for the "Citizens' Protection in Federal Databases Act of 2003," a bill that would require federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies to disclose the extent to which they subscribe to commercial databases of personal information. Introduced by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the bill would bar funds for any procurement of records of the travel and purchasing habits of Americans until the agencies had publicly reported to Congress about their use and analysis of the information and any privacy protection standards they follow. | |

CDT Reports Calls Pennsylvania ISP Law Unconstitutional and Unsound,
Request Filed for Records of Undisclosed Web Site Blocking The Center for Democracy and Technology today released a major report calling unconstitutional a recent Pennsylvania law that forces Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access to numerous web sites without adequate court oversight. The report's release coincides with a request under Pennsylvania's right-to-know law seeking records of the Attorney General's previously undisclosed demands to block web sites pursuant to the law. |
