 November 8, 2001 US Court Finds that French Law Violates the First Amendment
Thursday, November 8, 2001 - In a victory for free expression and an open Internet, Judge Jeremy Fogel of the US District Court for the Northern District of California yesterday ruled that a French court order requiring Yahoo! to restrict content on Yahoo.com violates the First Amendment. The case, Yahoo! Inc v. LICRA, centers on a dispute over Yahoo!-hosted auctions featuring Nazi memorabilia. The Court said that the French court order barring such auctions on Yahoo's US-based site would not be enforced.
 August 31, 2001International Study Calls for Democratic Elections, Public Participation in Internet Domain Names Management Group
WASHINGTON, August 31, 2001 - The global body that coordinates the Internet's domain name system should open itself up to public participation by creating a broadly open membership system that will allow Internet users to participate in policy-making and elect some of the body's board of directors, according to a new study by an international team of experts. The study, written by experts from non-profit institutes and universities in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas, comes as the domain names management body, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), prepares to consider its future course at a meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay September 6-10.

 July 2, 2001CDT hires communications policy expert for new international project
WASHINGTON, July 2 - Telecommunications lawyer Paige Anderson has joined the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT ) to work on a new project aimed at addressing the global digital divide through legal and regulatory reform in developing countries. Anderson is taking a lead role in the Global Internet Policy Initiative, a joint project of CDT and Internews, a non-profit supporting independent media with offices in 22 countries. GIPI serves as a resource to local policymakers and stakeholders, offering policy consultations, training, legislative analysis, and other expert assistance in the Internet policy development process.
 May 1, 2001 CDT Supports The "E-government Act Of 2001"
WASHINGTON, May 1 - The Center of Democracy and Technology today announced support for the "E-Government Act of 2001," a bill intended to fundamentally change the way the federal government uses information technology to interact with citizens. Introduced by Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) along with the Congressional Internet Caucus Co-Chairs Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the bill would require the government, for the first time ever, to systematically plan its enormous expenditures for computer systems in ways that will make government information and services more accessible to ordinary citizens.

 April 3, 2001 Prominent Lawyer/Technologist Joins CDT to Lead New Project Promoting the Public Interest in Emerging Internet Technology
WASHINGTON, April 3 - John Morris, an attorney with broad expertise in Internet technology as well as constitutional and telecommunications law, has joined the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) on April 2 to head up a new project aimed at promoting better public interest participation in the technical development of the Internet. Morris will lead CDT's "Internet Standards, Technology and policy Project," between technologists, policymakers, and advocates, and will seek to increase public involvement in technical decisions as well as technical understanding among policymakers.
