De-identified health data is used in a variety of ways by a range of public and private entities. Applications of this data include quality improvement, public health, research, and commercial uses. However, current de-identification standards in HIPAA are not as effective as they once were at protecting privacy. Advances in technology have made re-identifying health data easier and cheaper than ever before, and, HIPAA does not provide proper protections against re-identification. Stronger standards are needed for de-identified data in order to maintain individuals’ health privacy and build trust in the health care system.
