CALEA and Tech Mandates

CALEA is a 1994 law requiring telephone companies to design their networks to make them easy for the government to tap. Regulators have extended the CALEA mandate to the Internet.  CDT resisted this expansion and is continuing to fight design mandates that will threaten privacy and impede innovation.
