New technology has created powerful new ways for consumers to live their lives online and for industry and government to gather, store, sort, analyze, locate, correlate, and disseminate data, some of which is personal data. To address the privacy challenges raised by new technologies and practices, CDT has recommended that Congress update the Privacy Act of 1974 and address online privacy risks broadly by enacting a baseline consumer privacy law that would protect consumers from inappropriate collection and misuse of their personal information, both online and offline.
CDT has created a working group of public interest groups, government representatives and industry to develop suggestions to address them. CDT also drafted The E-Privacy Act Amendments of 2009 in an effort to collect these ideas and offer them for public comment through a wiki-style Web site, eprivacyact.org.
