Senate Panel Approves Data Security Legislation - The Senate Judiciary Committee today approved data security legislation that would impose relatively strict requirements for notifying individuals when their personal information has been compromised by a security breach. The bill would allow individuals to obtain access to files that data brokers hold on them for purposes of correcting inaccuracies. It would also require government agencies to pay careful attention to security and privacy issues when using private-sector databases. These are two important features not included in other pending data security bills. The path forward for data security legislation remains unclear, as there are a variety of bills being put forward by different congressional committees. CDT supports the Senate Judiciary language.
