Bill Would Require Disclosure of Data Mining Programs - Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the Federal Agency Data Mining Reporting Act (S. 236). The bi-partisan legislation would require federal agencies to report to Congress on their data mining activities. "This would be an important first step in setting reasonable limits on data mining," said Jim Dempsey, CDT policy director. "Currently, Congress and the public have no clear picture of what data mining programs are even in operation." S. 236 also would require the Administration to assess the effectiveness of each program. Similar language was included earlier this year in the Senate-passed bill on the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. April 16, 2007
