CDT Urges Major Changes to REAL ID Act and Regulations - The Department of Homeland Security can and should make substantial changes to its proposed REAL ID regulations in order to avoid serious privacy and security risks, CDT testified to the DHS Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee. Following the oral testimony given by CDT Plesser Fellow Sophia Cope last week, CDT today issued its full recommendations to the committee. CDT believes that the REAL ID Act itself is fundamentally flawed in a way that can't be fixed with regulatory tweaks and must be repealed or substantially rewritten. But there are several areas where the draft regulations could be significantly improved to better protect the privacy and security of Americans should the Act remain unchanged. March 28, 2007
