Broad Coalition Opposes WIPO Broadcast Treaty Draft - CDT and a diverse group of companies, trade associations, and public interest organizations criticized a treaty currently under negotiation at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as unnecessary, overbroad, restrictive of fair use and home networking technology, and carrying new litigation risks. Members of the coalition delivered a joint statement to the U.S. WIPO delegation, as well as the delegations of other WIPO countries, as they prepare for key diplomatic meetings on the treaty next week. CDT believes that the treaty, by creating a complicated new layer of intellectual-property-like rights for broadcasters and cable-casters, would pose new and unwarranted hurdles to the robust flow of information on the Internet.
