Groups Urge Review of Veterans Data Practices - CDT has joined a coalition of public interest groups calling on Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt to launch a compliance review of the Department of Veterans Affairs over the data breach that exposed the personal data of millions of veterans to a common burglar. Leavitt has the authority to review the security breach under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Thirty organizations organized by Washington-based Health Privacy project signed the letter urging Leavitt to exert his statutory authority. June 01, 2006
