UN Working Group Releases Internet Governance Report - In a long-awaited report to the United Nations, the UN-chartered Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) proposes potentially drastic changes to how the Internet's core systems are managed. The report includes several troubling proposals calling for the creation of new intergovernmental regulatory bodies to manage key Internet resources and set global policies for online communications. WGIG also touts the value of coordination between private groups, civil society and governments in Internet governance. The report is intended to provide background for negotiations between national delegations in the months leading up to the World Summit on the Information Society, scheduled to take place in Tunis, Tunisia in November.
