Court Strikes Down FCC's "Broadcast Flag" Rules - A Federal court ruled today that the FCC did not have the authority to mandate "broadcast flag" regulations designed to deter widespread copying of digital TV broadcasts. The rules would have required that televisions, computers, and all other devices handling broadcast digital programs obey certain content protection standards starting in July 2005. The debate over the flag scheme is now likely to move to Congress, whose authorization would be needed to revive the rules. May 06, 2005
