The US Department of Commerce announces new plan to ensure free access to government information - As a part of the plan DOC decided to close down the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). NTIS has been a repository for information, charging citizens for information that is free in other places on the Internet and that was paid for with taxpayer dollars. CDT's recent report the "10 Most Wanted Government Documents," prepared in collaboration with OMB Watch found that agencies are actually saving money by providing information through the Internet for free August 13, 1999
