ICANN Surveys Uses, Protections of Domain Name Information - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization responsible for administering domain names on the Internet, is soliciting feedback on the uses of data collected when people or companies register Internet domain names. Such data, known as Whois data, includes such potentially sensitive material as registrants' telephone numbers, addresses, and e-mail addresses--but is also used for important network maintenance. In its survey, ICANN asks users about their priorities for using or searching WHOIS data, but also about the importance of privacy for such information. June 12, 2001
