DC Circuit Quashes RIAA Subpoenas Against Alleged File Sharers - In an unexpected reversal of lower court rulings, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals quashed subpoenas issued by the RIAA to obtain the names of Internet users alleged to be illegally trading music files online. CDT has argued that reasonable tools to enforce legitimate copyright interests are important, but that the subpoena process employed by the RIAA raises serious privacy concerns for Internet users. In the wake of this decision, we expect that Congress will be called on to craft a more balanced approach that better protects user privacy. December 19, 2003
