House Subcommittee Passes International Consumer Protection Act - he House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection has passed an important new measure expanding the authority of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to help track down fraudulent spammers and other Internet scam artists around the globe. The bill (HR 3143), as introduced by Representatives Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), represents a compromise between the congressional staff, the FTC, consumer groups and civil libertarians that will authorize the FTC to engage in cross-border enforcement while protecting privacy, due process rights and accountability.
