Administration's Latest Crypto Controls Leave Little Guy Unprotected - Although allowing export of DES-level encryption and giving exemptions to specialized industry groups, the new encryption policy continues to jeopardize the privacy and security of individual encryption users. Moreover, it continues to use export controls as a club to force the adoption of risky "key recovery" systems without addressing the privacy concerns raised by backdoor government access to our most sensitive data. As the Administration pushes for mandatory key recovery by offering export incentives to user who offer plaintext or "backdoor" access, civil liberties groups will continue to lobby Congress and advocate for broader export relief.
