Surveillance Bill Delayed until January - The Senate has deferred action on surveillance legislation until next year, after some Senators objected to provisions granting immunity to telephone companies that have assisted in warrantless surveillance of the communications of Americans. As lawmakers seek compromise on the liability issue and the long-term question of how closely courts should supervise national security eavesdropping, Congress is likely to extend the February 1st expiration date of legislation adopted in August that gave the President broad authority to wiretap calls into and out of the U.S. with little judicial oversight.
