Senate Committee to Consider Wiretap Bill - The Senate Judiciary Committee is planning on November 8 to consider legislation that sets rules allowing U.S. intelligence agencies to snoop on the international communications of Americans, including their telephone calls and e-mail. The bill, S. 2248, is intended to replace a hastily enacted law that granted the President authority to carry out warrantless surveillance of these communications in the name of fighting terrorism. CDT is urging Senators to amend the bill, which has already been approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee, to ensure that there is adequate judicial supervision of any surveillance affecting the rights of Americans.
